Abstract
Mastitis is a common problem in dairy herds and is responsible for promoting large economic losses, but this is a subject that has been little studied in the area of buffalo farming. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gather, through a review, information on the incidence of mastitis in buffaloes. Seeking to describe dairy buffalo in Brazil, addressing the incidence of mastitis in these animals, detailing factors that are responsible for the resistance of these animals to the incidence of mastitis. As well as the main pathogens responsible for this inflammation, in addition to presenting the main diagnoses used to identify this disease. Also gathering information on prevention and what treatments for mastitis and the negative impact on the composition of milk. It is concluded that the bacteria of the genera Staphylococcus and Streptococcus are the main responsible for infectious mastitis in buffaloes. Promoting changes in milk such as decreased levels of lactose, fat and protein, elevated blood fractions of milk, saline instability, increased pH and reduced balance of milk protein, which impairs the final quality of the product. Among the factors responsible for the greater resistance of buffaloes in relation to cattle, the incidence of mastitis, the physiology of the mammary gland and the composition of milk are cited as the most significant by several authors. Two main diagnostic methods have been identified that identify subclinical mastitis in the literature, which are the somatic cell count using an electron microscope or the California Mastits Test.
