Abstract
The incidence of lightning strikes on buildings and electrical systems can cause significant physical and financial damage, in addition to posing a risk to human life. These dangers are especially elevated in regions with a high frequency of lightning strikes, such as the state of Minas Gerais. Due to this high incidence, it is important that buildings and infrastructures are prepared to handle lightning strikes by implementing safety and precautionary measures to minimize risks. In this context, the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards, through NBR 5419, establishes guidelines for the design, installation, and maintenance of lightning protection systems. This study focuses on a company located in the Ouro Preto city that does not have a Lightning Protection System (LPS). The main objective of this work is to analyze and propose protective measures against damage resulting from lightning strikes on the company's facilities. The main achievements include the risk analysis and the development of a coordinated surge protection plan. The implementation of this proposal aims to reduce the company's damages and financial losses, which currently face a significant number of problems caused by lightning strikes.
