dc.description.abstractIn 2022, the United Nations released a forecast indicating that, by 2050, the world population will reach 9.7 billion people (UN, 2022). The animal feed sector is a significant player in providing animal protein for this growing population. This historical review aimed to outline the key historical events and their implications for the legislation regulating Brazilian feed factories. Throughout history, these factories have been at the center of major controversies related to the spread of zoonoses. Consequently, over the years, government agencies have gained a prominent role in controlling the animal food sector. In Brazil, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Supply (MAPA) has the fundamental duty of assisting the sector and creating tools that ensure the quality and safety of the produced feed. It is concluded that up-to-date and active legislation, solid quality management, and the training of handlers are essential pillars to ensure a safe product. Thus, ongoing studies and discoveries contribute to the improvement of sector regulations, directly influencing the quality of products offered to the end consumer.
